A steamHouse Primer
What does every person, anywhere, actually need to become a conscious, capable, decent adult?
The whole framework in one read — the scope, the logic, and the case. Most programs for young people pick a destination and build backward to it. steamHouse refuses to start there, and this is where that refusal leads.

The 78 are the concrete, observable markers a person grows toward — sorted into three channels by what they develop:

The Eleven. The four core principles are one of eleven things the architecture builds once it takes the nine facts seriously. Eleven isn't a round number — it's what the work derived, not a count fit to a slogan.

Everything below this line is found — what's known to be true about how people develop. Everything above it is built — what follows once you take that knowledge seriously. The Value is the single place the structure crosses from is to ought: one openly-held wager, stated plainly so it can be examined and argued with, rather than smuggled in. Accept it and the rest follows; decline it and the architecture still stands as a description, just without a reason to climb it.
The base isn't asserted — it's the floor the rest is built on, drawn from what's well established about people. Found, not made; revisable as the science revises.

The two-minute version
A working community trying to build the missing piece
School teaches subjects. Sports teach skills. Family teaches habits. Faith, where it still does, teaches meaning. But no institution has been responsible for the operating system underneath all the apps — how to think, how to own your life, how to treat other people, how to engage honestly with what's true.
steamHouse is a community-based human-development organization in Golden, Colorado, founded by a former public-school science teacher, Brenton Burnett, after twenty-two years in the classroom. It runs a real local club for families, has built a curriculum and a small library of writing, and rests on a single wager: that becoming the conscious, purposeful author of your own life is worth developing toward. It is built as an overlay, not a replacement — designed to sit on top of what families, schools, clubs, and traditions already do, not to compete with them for time.
The deeper claim is about a gap: between what we actually know about human development and what the environments around young people are actually doing. Families with social capital tend to transmit these underlying capacities at home. Families without it often can't — not for lack of love, but because no one ever told them what to transmit. The cost of that unevenness is enormous and largely invisible.
The point of the overlay posture is that nothing here asks a family or a tradition to give up what they already care about. A scout troop stays a scout troop; a congregation stays a congregation; a robotics team stays a robotics team. What steamHouse adds is a shared language and a small set of capacities underneath whatever the activity already is — the part that was always doing the real forming, now named and made teachable.
The question underneath
The widest question produces the narrowest answer
Most organizations that work with young people pick a place to stand — a set of standards, a list of virtues, a tradition, a sport — and grow outward from there. steamHouse refused to pick an anchor. It took the largest possible scope — every person, anywhere, in every era and culture — and asked what every one of them actually needs.
Almost everyone's first reaction is the same: that's too big a question; be realistic; pick a place to start. But when you ask what every person needs, in every context, most things fall away. Specific knowledge varies by domain. Specific skills vary by job. Specific values vary by tradition. What survives the test of universality is small. steamHouse calls this the scope-focus paradox: the widest possible question produces the tightest possible answer.
The founder spent twenty-two years inside one of those familiar starting points — a science classroom in a well-regarded district outside Denver — and noticed something specific. He could see what young people needed, decision by decision, and could see that almost none of it was what the curriculum was about. The students who were thriving had things in them no class was teaching. The students who were suffering were missing things no class was naming. The school could not close that gap because it was not designed to: it was designed to teach physics.
So instead of picking a place to stand, he stayed with the impossible question for years rather than weeks. What happened when he refused to settle is what the whole project is built on: the widest possible scope did not produce the most ambitious answer. It produced the narrowest. What remained, after everything local had been culled, was a small set of things that show up wherever a person is trying to live a conscious life — whatever their circumstances, whatever their century.
The four
Four core principles — one for each basic relationship
What survived the test came down to four. They are not values about anything in particular, and not commandments. They are the postures from which every belief, commitment, and life decision is held — each a basic relationship a conscious person has, in a different domain.
The four are not a values list to be agreed with; they are the capacities the wager turns out to require. If becoming the conscious, purposeful author of your own life is the thing worth developing toward, then you need a mind that can watch itself (Reflective Thinking), a self that knows it can act (Personal Agency), a way of meeting others that doesn't dissolve either of you (Mutual Respect), and a tether to reality that keeps authorship honest rather than merely willful (Objective Reason). Drop any one and the wager fails in a specific, nameable way.
They also line up by domain, which is why there are four and not five: Reflective Thinking is the meta-capacity that watches all the others (the whole); Personal Agency is the relationship with one's own life (the self); Mutual Respect is the relationship with other lives (others); Objective Reason is the relationship with what is actually there (the world). Small enough that an attentive ten-year-old can grasp it — and deep enough to take a lifetime to live well. This is what steamHouse means by first principles: not the answers to the big questions, but the orientations you go after them from.
Not one more list
The contribution isn't the list — it's the method, and the convergence
Every program in this space has a list. So what makes this one different? Two things, and neither is the list itself. First, the method: most lists were built from the inside out, picking an anchor and growing to fit. steamHouse worked the other way and let the test of universality cull the list down — so what survived is the part you can stand on regardless of where you came from.
Second — and more surprising — the list isn't unique to steamHouse. Several serious people, in different traditions, with different methods, across different decades, arrived at substantially the same architecture. Each came at it from a different starting point:

Why the convergence matters: when genuinely independent lines of inquiry — different countries, different methods, different starting assumptions — keep landing on the same structure, the structure is probably tracking something real rather than reflecting one person's taste. Six independently-derived frameworks converging on substantially the same architecture is the kind of pattern you'd expect if the architecture were tracking something true about people, rather than something distinctive about any one of them. It is the same epistemic logic that makes consilience persuasive in the sciences: a conclusion reached by many independent roads is more trustworthy than one reached by a single road, however well-paved.

The honest framing is kept throughout: convergence is strong evidence about the shape of the architecture, not yet causal evidence about outcomes.
First principles, not final answers
The two-layer move that lets any tradition pick it up intact
steamHouse takes a deliberate two-layer position. The Reasoned is what it argues for openly: the four core principles, the claim that the examined life beats the unexamined one, that conscious authorship beats reactive autopilot, that reality matters more than your preferences about it. These are not neutral procedures — steamHouse is willing to argue for them and be argued with.
The Authored is what you fill in for yourself: what you conclude about God, ultimate meaning, politics, which traditions you pass on, what the good life looks like in detail. steamHouse provides the architecture; you fill it. First principles, not final answers.
The layering is the whole point, not a hedge. It is the structural feature that allows the framework to be picked up, intact, by Christian and Muslim and Jewish and secular and Buddhist and skeptical families alike — traditions that disagree about almost everything else. The architecture is broad enough to be shared; the conclusions are personal enough to remain yours. It is the difference between a framework and a creed: a creed hands you the answers; a framework hands you the conditions under which you can find your own and hold them well.
It is also, not incidentally, what pluralism requires to function across the differences it actually contains. People who can think reflectively, own their lives, treat others as authors of their own, and engage honestly with reality can disagree productively about almost anything. People who can't, can't. The deep bet: agreement on fundamentals is broader than we've been told — the obstacle isn't that no shared ground exists, but that almost no one has built a curriculum around what we already share.
What this is — and isn't
The honest ledger
It is not a religion: it doesn't provide ultimate meaning or tell you whether God exists, though it works inside traditions well. It is not a political program: no party, no candidate, no policy agenda — though the four principles are the conditions under which democratic life works. It is not a school, and not trying to replace one; the posture is overlay.
And it is not yet a finished body of evidence. The framework is internally coherent, the argument strong, independent confirmations real — but rigorous outcome data (randomized trials, controlled longitudinal cohorts) does not yet exist. The honest statement: the case today is a design argument, a convergence argument, and a practitioner argument, backed by 2,000+ vetted sources. It is not yet a causal-evidence argument. Building that evidence base is the next chapter.
The temptation, going public, is to overclaim — to call the working community a validated program and the design argument settled science. steamHouse declines that, on principle: a framework built on what is known to be true forfeits its own warrant the moment it starts asserting things that aren't yet. So the ledger stays honest. The Club is a community demonstrating that the model exists and runs, not a controlled trial of its outcomes.
The architecture was found, not invented — other people found the same one — and the same humility that found it governs how its evidence is described. The contribution is in making it teachable, transmissible, and usable by communities; the warrant for stronger claims is the work of the next decade, and researchers are part of it.
Who built it
One person, a community, a decade
steamHouse is, at the moment, mostly the work of one person with a community around him. The founder is Brenton Burnett — son of a Presbyterian minister whose central charge was about integrity, not belief (are you actually living what you say you believe?) — and a science and STEM teacher for twenty-two years in a well-regarded district outside Denver. He watched the same pattern in physics he came to suspect was true of people: look carefully enough, and apparent complexity resolves into a small number of underlying things. He left the classroom in 2016 to work on this full-time.
The work has had the feel of an archaeology more than an invention — a plucky, semi-lucky dig that turned up a forgotten map in a back-corner library. The point of the image is that the architecture was found, not invented: the map was always there. The contribution is making the connection visible — and then taking the decade needed to verify the map is actually accurate. Around him now: a hundred-plus families in the Club, a newly constituted board, and a web of researchers, faith leaders, and educators who've recognized the work.
The decade was the price of the depth. A project that asks the impossible question — what does every person, anywhere, ever, actually need? — and refuses the easy answer takes a long time to mature; it is closer to infrastructure than to programming. The version arriving now is not finished and never will be, but it is far enough along to be substantially correct, substantially defensible, and substantially useful to the people who need it.
What kept it honest was the same posture the archaeology image carries: the map was always there to be found, which means the credit belongs partly to everyone who drew a piece of it before — and the job now is verification and transmission, not authorship. That is why the work can sit underneath a secular school and a religious community at the same time without asking either to convert.
