TRICKED

How your mind gets hijacked — and what you can do about it.

TRICKED works at the scale of the self. Its subject is the architecture of cognitive vulnerability that modern environments are built to exploit — four named attack vectors (Confirmation, Availability, Conformity, and Present-Bias) operating against an evaluative memory that evolved for conditions which no longer exist.

The book does three things in order. It names the mechanism — what your mind is actually doing when it feels hijacked. It shows the exploitation — how engineered stimuli target the reward system, and why the platforms that do this produce exactly what their scoreboard rewards. And it offers the response — which is not willpower and not transcendence, but architecture: the deliberate design of conditions, because the conditions are what got exploited in the first place.

Between stimulus and response there is a gap. Modern life is built to collapse it. This book is the case that the gap can be found, widened, and inhabited — the foundational treatment of Personal Agency.

That is the move the whole trilogy rests on, told first at the smallest scale. Find the gap in yourself; then the next book asks how it holds inside a group, and the third asks how you build the conditions that make either possible.

What this book engages

Every steamHouse book carries a developmental index — a compact, citeable record of which of the 78 Development Markers the work substantively engages, in the spirit of a Lexile measure or a cataloging block. It is a study aid, not a curriculum. TRICKED engages these most directly:
